It was a quiet Saturday morning, two years ago in 2024. I was in the kitchen, immersed in the joy of cooking, when an unexpected knock echoed at my door.
At first, I hesitated. I had just moved into a new apartment not known to many friends.
But the knock persisted. When I opened the door, I found a young girl, no more than 15, standing timidly before me.
She greeted me politely and asked if I had clothes she could wash. Surprised, I told her I had none and returned to my cooking.
Yet something stirred within me — a nudge of conscience, a whisper of destiny. I stepped back outside, and there she was, walking away. I called her back.
Her name was Sandy (pseudonym). Through our conversation, I discovered she was an orphan, living with someone, struggling to survive. She had just completed Junior High School but had no means to continue her education. I remembered seeing her before, selling kitchen utensils with other girls in the neighborhood.
Today, however, she was roaming, desperate for odd jobs to earn a little money.
At that very moment, fate aligned with purpose. Our organization, Write for World, was running a sponsored project with Plan International Ghana, training 30 young women in Fashion Design and Entrepreneurship. I asked Sandy if she would be interested in learning sewing and Fashion Design. Her eyes lit up with hope, and she said yes.
The following Monday, she arrived at my office with her guardians. Together, we agreed she should be enrolled as a beneficiary of the project. That decision became the turning point in her life.
Today, Sandy is no longer the girl knocking on doors for survival. She is a fully-fledged Fashion Designer, equipped with skills, confidence, and vision.
On behalf of Write for World, I proudly presented her with a sewing machine — a startup kit to launch her journey of independence and impact.
Sandy’s story is more than personal triumph; it is a testament to what happens when compassion meets opportunity. It is proof that empowerment is not charity, but an investment in dignity and destiny.
